A client asked me something last week I couldn’t answer off the top of my head: “Does ChatGPT even know my business exists?” I typed a few questions into ChatGPT and Perplexity about her industry. Her competitors showed up. She didn’t. Nothing wrong with her rankings on Google — she just wasn’t built to be found by anything other than Google.

That’s a new problem, and it’s worth taking seriously before it becomes an expensive one.

AI Search Isn’t a Side Channel Anymore

AI-driven search — Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar tools — now accounts for somewhere around 15–20% of search interactions, and that share is expected to keep climbing sharply through the rest of the year. WordPress runs a huge chunk of the content these systems pull from — something like 43% of all websites — which is exactly why it matters whether your specific WordPress site is structured in a way these tools can actually parse and trust.

Traditional SEO doesn’t disappear here. Keywords, backlinks, and page speed (I covered the speed side in my Core Web Vitals post) still matter. But they’re no longer sufficient on their own. AI systems don’t just match keywords — they try to recognize what your business actually is, who runs it, and whether they can trust what you’re saying enough to repeat it.

What “Being Readable to AI” Actually Means

This isn’t about writing differently for robots. It’s about making the structure of your site unambiguous.

Structured data (schema markup)

Schema is the behind-the-scenes markup that tells search engines and AI crawlers exactly what a piece of content is — an article, an FAQ, a business, a product, a review. Sites with proper schema in place see meaningfully higher citation rates from AI tools than sites without it. If you’re running Rank Math or a similar SEO plugin, you likely already have basic schema; the gap I usually find in client sites is that it’s incomplete — no FAQ schema, no author markup, no organization details filled in.

Answer-first content structure

AI tools tend to pull the clearest, most direct answer on a page, not the most creative intro paragraph. Leading with a plain-language answer, then expanding underneath with headings an AI (or a human skimming) can parse, gets pulled far more often than a page that buries the point three paragraphs down.

E-E-A-T signals: who are you, really?

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust. A real author bio with credentials, a genuine About page, visible contact information — these aren’t fluff, they’re exactly what both Google and AI systems check before deciding your content is worth citing. This is the same trust signal I wrote about from a different angle in my plugin security checklist post: a site that looks maintained and legitimate gets trusted more, by algorithms and by people.

Don’t accidentally block the AI crawlers

I’ve found more than one client site blocking GPTBot or similar crawlers in robots.txt, sometimes from an overzealous security plugin default. If you want AI visibility, that’s the opposite of what you want.

What This Doesn’t Mean

It doesn’t mean stuffing your site with AI-generated filler content to “feed the algorithm.” Google has been clear that automation itself isn’t the problem — thin, unhelpful content is, whether a person or a tool wrote it. If anything, the AI-search shift raises the bar: it rewards content with a real point of view and genuine expertise, and it’s gotten better at spotting pages that exist purely to rank rather than to help someone.

Where I’d Start, If I Were You

Don’t try to overhaul the whole site at once. I usually work through this in order for clients:

1. Audit what schema you already have. Most Rank Math or Yoast setups have basic schema running but leave a lot of fields blank.

2. Fix your About and author pages first. These carry more E-E-A-T weight than almost anything else on the site, and they’re usually the most neglected pages.

3. Restructure your two or three highest-value pages to lead with a direct answer before expanding into detail.

4. Check robots.txt for anything accidentally blocking AI crawlers.

You can see exactly what schema Google can currently parse on any of your pages using Google’s own structured data documentation and the Rich Results Test — worth five minutes before you assume anything is already set up correctly.

The Takeaway

Being invisible to AI search isn’t a future problem — for a lot of small business sites, it’s already happening quietly, the same way that client of mine found her competitors showing up and her business didn’t. The fix isn’t dramatic, but it does take someone actually going through the schema, the page structure, and the crawler settings rather than hoping the SEO plugin handles it by default.

If you want a second set of eyes on whether your site is even visible to AI tools right now, get in touch and I’ll run through it with you.
